NEXT WORKSHOPS ARE ON...

SUNDAY 21ST MARCH AND SUNDAY 25TH APRIL

WORKSHOPS ARE HELD AT HENRIETTA'S HOLISTIC HEALING CENTRE ON MILLAR CRESCENT, MORNINGSIDE  AND RUN FROM 1-5PM

These workshops are just for the girls!  We love our men but sometimes we just can't chat as easily in front of them!  Don't worry though, all the important stuff is written down for them so they won't be completely in the dark.

Sometimes if it's not your first baby you can feel a bit overlooked and expected to know everything already.  Antenatal information changes rapidly and what might have been recommended a few years ago might be different now and our WOMB-WISE WOMEN refresher course for second or third time mums can help you fill in the gaps and support you if you'd like to do things differently this time.

The course is for mums-to-be only and is a one off 4 hour class.  It runs in Morningside and costs £40.

WORKSHOP CONTENT

    • discussing past experiences - debriefing a difficult labour or one that took an unexpected turn can be crucial to how you approach the next.  If possible every birth needs to be approached with a clean slate without any anxieties resulting from previous experience.  The workshop will hopefully set you on your way to feeling optimistic and positive. Of course, if you don't want to go into details that's fine, any wishes you have will be respected and you can participate to whatever level you feel comfortable.

    • refreshing and updating your antenatal knowledge and basic birth physiology. I will give out handouts about all the stages of labour, how to recognise each stage and how you can help yourself throughout.

    • Pain relief - the pros and cons of drug/drug free births. How some methods can lead to intervention. We will also briefly discuss inductions and when they are necessary and why sometimes they're not.

    • self help techniques i.e. relaxation, massage, positions. There will be handouts on many different tools to use so you can chose any you think might help.

    • how emotions and environment can effect labour - I will be revealing closely guarded doula secrets! Why labour often stops when you get to hospital, the effect bright lights have on the birthing process, how chatting stops you progressing, why the fears of anyone supporting you can affect you directly and lots more.

    • how having the right support can make a huge difference - tips for birth partners. Dads are often forgotten about - granted it's not their show but it can be a very emotional experience and they often feel lost as to what to do. The workshop will have lots of ideas of how they can help you but also how they can look after themselves throughout and how to work well with the midwife team.

    • preparing siblings for the big event - ways of involving them in the days surrounding the birth and how to keep them feeling secure.

    • adjusting to life after the birth with your newly extended family - some cultures have a compulsory 40 day lying in period where the mum isn't allowed to do anything. Sadly we often feel we have to be back to running the house within days (sometimes hours!) of giving birth. Here we have tips and advice on how to ease yourself in slowly and getting off to the best start.

Each person on the course is asked to respect the others opinions on any matters especially emotional ones such as feeding methods. The above is a guide to what I will definitely cover in the workshop but much more comes up naturally and I will answer any questions that I can.

I will also bring an extensive collection of books for you to look at during breaks or throughout.

To allow everyone to be included, the maximum number of mums for the course is 8.  For more details please e-mail Ruth on mother.me@virgin.net or phone 0131 447 5008.
